Grounds and Facilities

Milkwood Steiner School is situated on Larrakia land (Darwin), in the tropical north of Australia delivering a Steiner Curriculum to 100 students from Kindergarten to Class 6. Our school has unique large tropical style buildings with classrooms that open out on to broad verandas, with a playground that extends to a beautiful native bushland. Milkwood’s Music Studio includes facilities for learning violin, viola, cello, guitar, percussion piano and choral studies. Milkwood’s Library is a beautiful space that inspires deep engagement in storytelling for children of all ages. Milkwood’s School Bus seats 27 people, used weekly for excursions and camps and to access the facilities of neighbouring sporting clubs.

In 2020, Milkwood committed to a major revitalisation of its library. The renovations were completed by local artists and builders, transforming the school library into a creative, inspired space for children to engage with storytelling. The expansion of the Library collection through an anti-oppressive lens, included significant investment in representation of gender and gender diversity across all genres, representation of diverse First Nations narratives and addressing visibility and access to non-text based narratives, including oral histories, storytelling through art, music and dance, graphic novels, and print texts recommended as best practice for students with print disabilities, and valuable for all students.

A Concept Plan for Milkwood’s future school site includes the addition a ceremony ground created in consultation with Larrakia elders, an Outdoor Classroom, sporting facilities, community garden, a performing arts space and the capacity to expand Middle and High School facilities in the coming years.
